If you are used to going into the office every day, and this is your first time routinely working from home, we want to offer some tips to make sure you are successful and productive in your new space.
Prioritizing Tasks in your Home Office
There can be obstacles and distractions at home, whether it’s your spouse, kids, pets, etc. It’s important to list out your priorities for the day so you can stay on track despite distractions.
Take a few minutes every morning to write down what you want to accomplish that day. As you complete each task, cross it off! This will help you stay focused and motivated throughout the day.
Creating A “New Normal”
We know that for most of you, working in a home office is a bit of an adjustment. The chair, desk, keyboard or wrist pad may feel different from the ones you normally use in your regular office. As a result, your body may begin to tense up.
Incorporate some exercise into your daily routine! Some shoulder rolls, wrist rolls and hand stretches can get your blood flowing to relax your body. Also, remember to get up and get moving every once in a while.
Just like when you’re in the office, get up and walk around! Take a stroll around your house or building. If the weather is nice, go outside for a 15-minute walk. You’ll be amazed at the difference it makes.
Stay in Touch with Co-Workers
If you’re used to working in an office environment, you’re probably used to the camaraderie that comes with seeing your co-workers every day. Remember, you’re not alone while you’re working from home!
Be sure to keep in contact with your co-workers throughout the day. Of course, you should limit excessive contact, but it’s good to check in with the ones you work closely with at certain points during the day or week. Not only will this keep you updated on one another’s progress on mutual projects, but it will also remind you that you are not working alone and help you stay focused.
A Regular Routine
It’s important to maintain your regular routine. If you normally wake up every day at a certain time to work out, keep doing it!
Make sure to start and finish your work at the same time you usually would if you were in an office, including taking your regularly scheduled lunch break.
Sticking to your usual routine will create a sense of stability, keeping you focused on what is most important: the work.
Tips for Video Conferencing
While you are working from home, you will be utilizing a lot more video conferences! It’s important to remember to treat video conferences like a normal in-person meeting.
- Maintain eye contact. You don’t want to give the person you’re meeting with the impression that you are disinterested. Make sure to look directly at the camera when speaking.
- Remember to dress appropriately, as these are professional work meetings.
- Avoid Interruptions. Make sure those in your home know you will be on a work call, and to limit interruptions. If possible, try to use a dedicated room, closed off from the rest of your home to ensure privacy.
